Dana:

Dana here. So I am in charge of the marketing advertising for a new podcast. And I just wanted to know if you have any tips or advice, or a brand new podcast in how to, I guess marketed and do the research, like find that target audience and optimize all the apps and all the knowledge are there? There's just so many things, I just don't know where to start. Thank you.

Sarah:

Thanks for your question, Dana. You're right. There are so many strategies out there all the way from targeting your ideal audience to building a huge podcast launch team. And the good news is that you don't have to do it all there are some strategies that you can use to lay a foundation in order to start your show off with a bang. Strategy number one, is to create a listener persona, creating a listener persona is pretty simple. Think about what your listener likes to do it, what are some of their hobbies? What are some of their values, anything they believe in, maybe other shows that they like to listen to all of these things is going to help you get inside your listeners brain. So whatever strategy do end up trying is going to be a lot more effective than if you didn't really understand your listener at all. Strategy number two, is to make sure that listeners can find your podcast it doesn't matter if you've created the most amazing episode in the world. If listeners can't find it, how are they going to listen to it at a minimum, you want to submit your show to the major podcast directories like Apple podcasts, Google podcasts, Spotify, and even stitcher Buzzsprout makes this really easy, because has a list of all the major podcast directories right on your dashboard. So when you're ready, all you have to do is click on the links and then submit your show. Strategy number three is to find effective ways to pique curiosity podcast listeners have 10s of 1000s or more shows that they can listen to at any given time. So why would they pick your new one peeking? Curiosity means creating episode descriptions and even the title to make the listener go well, hmm, well, that's interesting, maybe I'll click on and have a listen. Strategy number four is to be active on one or two platforms, when you're promoting a new show, it's natural to want to be in all the places all the social media platforms, your email newsletter everywhere, in order to promote your new show, the truth is promoting a new show is a lot of work and being everywhere can leave you feeling overwhelmed and stretched really thin. Instead, what you can do is to figure out where your listeners hang out the most and focus your energy there. So go back to your listener persona. And take a look at that and then figure out where your listener likes to hang out. Strategy number five is to ask friends or family or even existing followers to listen to your show. There's absolutely nothing wrong with asking friends and families to listen to your show, especially if you know it'll benefit them. Plus, your friends and family really want to support your efforts. So why not let them and even better after they listen to the show, they can share it with someone else that they feel will benefit. And then they can help you spread the word that way. Strategy number six is to talk about your show even before it launches. So think about launch teams for products or services where they're building anticipation for something even before it comes out. And you can absolutely do that with your podcast. So go ahead and tap into your existing network like your friends, your family or even existing followers to have them share details about your show. And if you have a trailer out you can have them share it, talk about it. Maybe you can be a guest on other podcasts and then promote your show that way. So when it comes time for your show to officially launch, you'll have a list of listeners eager to listen to that first episode. Thank you for listening to Podcasting Q&A.
