Welcome to Podcasting Q&A

Cara Pacetti

Welcome to Podcasting Q&A, brought to you by the people at Buzzsprout. I'm your host, Cara Pacetti, and I'm bringing you the best tips and strategies to keep you podcasting with confidence. Before we answer today's question, did you know that every expert was once the person asking the basic questions? The fastest way to learn isn't pretending you know, it's being curious enough to ask. I hope that this encourages you to get curious and send in your questions using the fan mail link in the show notes. If you don't have a question, that's okay too. Just send us some fan mail anyway and let us know how Podcasting Q&A has helped you with your podcast. Today's question is what are the benefits of being a guest on someone else's podcast? Most podcasters think that guest appearances are all about getting more listeners for their show or promoting something they're selling. And while those things can happen, they're not the main reason why you should say yes to guesting on someone's show. Let's talk about three benefits you may not realize come with being a guest.

Perfect Your Craft

Cara Pacetti

Every time you make a guest appearance on another podcast, you have one more opportunity to perfect your craft. Opportunities to be a guest on someone else's show create comfort behind the mic and helps you become a better communicator. The more conversations you have, the more comfortable you'll become answering questions, telling stories, and explaining your ideas with clarity. You'll also discover which stories resonate with listeners and what questions people naturally ask in response. I want you to think of every interview as practice that makes you a stronger podcast host, speaker, and communicator. Learning how to communicate your message in a way that feels authentic is a skill that needs to be practiced. The best way to hone in that skill is to practice it in real time with real people continually. In addition to making your message more authentic, when you're explaining your message over and over again, a byproduct of that is the clarity you'll get around the intended purpose of your message.

Establish Tust

Cara Pacetti

Another benefit of guesting on somebody else's podcast is that it gives you the opportunity to establish trust with new listeners. Time helps build trust. Unlike social media posts or advertisements, a podcast conversation allows people to get to know you over 30, 45, or even 60 minutes. People trust other people they've spent time listening to. A podcast interview gives your listeners the chance to hear you, hear your personality, your expertise, and really how you think. This ends up being much more effective than a quick social media post lasting 30 seconds telling about your podcast. The kind of trust you build with new listeners builds connection and credibility in a way that very few other types of content can. Whether you're just there to serve as another opinion on the subject or you're there as the expert, your perspective is better established when you spend time as a guest explaining your thoughts. And whether listeners eventually subscribe to your podcast, your newsletter, or simply remember your name, trust is what opens those doors and it has to be established first.

Serve a New Audience

Cara Pacetti

The third benefit of being a guest on somebody else's podcast is that you get to serve someone else's audience. Instead of asking, what can I get from this interview? Ask yourself, how can I serve this person's audience? Authenticity equals engagement. When you focus on serving the audience instead of promoting yourself, you'll naturally become a more engaging guest, and hosts will be much more likely to invite you back or even recommend you as a guest in your niche to other podcasts. Your perspective can serve different parts of a podcaster's audience. Every podcast has listeners looking for encouragement, education, or even just a new perspective. The experiences you're sharing may be exactly what one particular person needs to hear on that episode. It's really a beautiful thing to have multiple perspectives, and you as a guest on a podcast can really help to open the door of a new way of thinking. Now, can guest appearances lead to more listeners for your own podcast or even more sales of a product or service? Absolutely. Those can be wonderful byproducts, but if they're your primary motivation, listeners can usually tell. I recommend leading with generosity and value first, and those opportunities will often follow naturally. So being a guest on a podcast isn't just about exposure. It's about becoming a better communicator, building genuine trust, and serving a new audience with people who may have never discovered you otherwise. So the next time you're invited to be a guest, don't think of it as a marketing opportunity. Think of it as an opportunity to serve. This mindset will set you up for success and hopefully more opportunities in the future. If after listening to this episode you are interested in being a guest on a podcast, there are some strategic steps that you can take in order to make sure that you are landing on the right podcast for you.
